On December 21, 2024, Learn Basic Tech hosted an
unforgettable event in Downtown Los Angeles, marking a pivotal moment by
engaging our youngest audience to date. In partnership with Jenni’s Flowers, a
nonprofit organization devoted to empowering transition-age foster youth (ages
18-38), we delivered an impactful day filled with digital literacy training and
interactive learning.
Jenni's Flower is on a mission to help foster youth bloom
into their full potential by supporting their personal and professional
development. Through community spaces, entrepreneurship pathways, and mindful
somatic practices, they provide essential tools and support for holistic
healing and personal growth. Their belief in the inherent capacity of every
individual to thrive aligns seamlessly with our mission to bridge the digital
divide.
This event was a significant milestone for Learn Basic Tech, as it was the first time we incorporated a Zoom session to accommodate students online. This hybrid approach ensured flexibility, allowing participants to join either in person or remotely. The eight-hour event was packed with engaging sessions on
vital digital topics such as computer basics, internet navigation, smartphone
functionality, app usage, and cybersecurity. Despite many participants
initially considering themselves tech-savvy, they quickly realized there was
much more to learn.
A highlight of the event was the interactive game "Hot
Seat," which brought energy and excitement to the room. Participants took
turns standing in front of a word related to the course content, while their
peers offered hints and clues to help them guess the word. This activity
fostered collaboration, reinforced learning, and added a fun, competitive edge
to the day.
Throughout the sessions, participants gained crucial
insights into staying safe and secure online. Many expressed surprise at the
depth of knowledge they acquired, especially regarding best practices for
cybersecurity. Key takeaways included the importance of using a VPN when
connected to public Wi-Fi, regularly changing passwords, and staying vigilant
against cybercriminals, particularly when shopping online.
Both in-person and online participants expressed deep gratitude for the knowledge provided by Learn Basic Tech. They were eager to apply their new skills in everyday life, whether for school, work, or personal growth. These discussions resonated deeply with the audience,
emphasizing the critical need for ongoing digital education in today's
interconnected world.
As the day concluded, the participants' dedication and
enthusiasm were rewarded. Each attendee received a laptop and a certificate of
completion, proudly presented by the Learn Basic Tech team. This gesture not
only celebrated their commitment but also provided them with essential tools to
continue their digital journey and apply their newfound knowledge.
We are thrilled to announce that more opportunities for
youth participation are on the horizon. Stay tuned for future events as we
continue to empower and educate through technology, helping individuals unlock
their potential and thrive in the digital age.
